    El CEO de Jaguar Land Rover, Ralf Speth, renunciará en septiembre.

    El fabricante de automóviles propiedad de Tata anunció hoy que Ralf Speth ha decidido retirarse de su cargo actual como Director Ejecutivo y Director Ejecutivo de Jaguar Land Rover al final de su mandato en septiembre de 2020.

    En la breve declaración, Chandrasekaran también dijo que Ralf Speth se convertirá en vicepresidente no ejecutivo y permanecerá en el directorio de Tata Sons. Jaguar Land Rover no anunció quién sucederá a Speth como CEO, pero la búsqueda ya ha comenzado.

    Jaguar estaría pensando desarrollar dos SUV basados en una plataforma de BMW.

    Se espera que los dos nuevos modelos sean un SUV pequeño y un crossover coupé de tamaño similar y es probable que lleven el nombre ‘Pace’ como parte de la familia de SUV de la firma.

    BMW y Jaguar firman una alianza de cooperación para coches eléctricos.

    La marca de Múnich ya ha encontrado aliado para el desarrollo de tecnologías de propulsión eléctrica. Lo hará con Jaguar después de firmar un acuerdo de cooperación con la del felino, en el que también se comprende el compartir otras tecnologías avanzadas, en materia de comunicación entre vehículos y de conducción autónoma.

    – New powertrain technologies support commitment to reduce vehicle emissions and improve fuel economy

    Coventry, UK: This week, Jaguar Land Rover will expand its powertrain family, unveiling new technologies for both current and future vehicles. The new additions will support the company’s long-term commitment to reduce vehicle emissions and improve fuel economy across its range through the introduction of more efficient engines along with alternative powertrains, lighter vehicles and improved vehicle energy conservation.

    At the heart of its low-emissions strategy, the new four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine is now in production at Jaguar Land Rover’s £1 billion Engine Manufacturing Centre. Designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK, these are the most advanced engines the company has ever developed. They will deliver up to 25 per cent more power than the engines they replace and offer fuel consumption reductions of up to 15 per cent.

    Looking to the future, Jaguar Land Rover has developed a revolutionary advanced automatic transmission that will both improve the efficiency of future vehicles and expand their all-wheel drive capability. The £30 million advanced research project, TRANSCEND, uses an innovative ultra-wide ratio spread (20) that integrates low-range gear box, dual-clutch and hybrid technologies to deliver new levels of off-road performance and fuel economy improvements of nearly 10%.

    Nick Rogers, Executive Director – Product Engineering, said: “Environmental innovation is at the heart of our strategy to dramatically reduce emissions up to 2020 and beyond. With the Ingenium family of powertrains and advanced research projects such as TRANSCEND, future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will emit significantly less CO₂. By 2020, new technologies will help us reduce our CO₂emissions by a further 25 per cent.”

    Ingenium petrol engines

    The Ingenium petrol engine features state-of-the-art technologies, such as an electrohydraulic valvetrain, integrated exhaust manifold and twin scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearing technology. They will deliver exceptional performance, efficiency and refinement while meeting the most stringent global emissions regulations.

    Nick Rogers said: “Ingenium has been developed as a modular family of powerful, efficient and refined all-aluminum petrol and diesel engines. All Ingenium engines deliver benchmark low levels of friction, contributing to inherently good efficiency and refinement.”

    Using a common architecture based on a 500cc per cylinder displacement delivers both maximum flexibility and scaleability. This enables a range of derivatives to be developed to suit applications as diverse as sports saloons and luxury SUVs.

    Following the launch of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesels in 2015, these advanced petrol engines become the latest Ingenium engines to enter production and will be available from 2017.

    TRANSCEND transmission

    TRANSCEND is an advanced research project that combines innovative mechanical design and advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver a compact, lightweight eight-speed transmission with an ultra-wide ratio spread of 20, more than double that of a conventional eight-speed automatics. Weighing around 20kg less than existing eight-speed automatics, TRANSCEND could be used in longitudinal rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles.

    Nick Rogers said: “TRANSCEND demonstrates Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to original research that improves the driving experience and the environmental performance of our vehicles. It will make manoeuvring and off-road use easier than ever before for drivers whilst also improving on-road vehicle dynamics and CO2 emissions.”

    With part funding from the UK government, the TRANSCEND programme aims to rebuild the UK’s transmission production – through investment in processes to develop lighter components as well as more energy-efficient manufacturing production – and promote the export of British hybrid vehicle technologies.

    Low emissions future

    Jaguar Land Rover has made significant investments in new technology and environmental innovation in recent years. Its vision for reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency is to make improvements in powertrain, continue its leadership in vehicle light-weighting and improve vehicle energy conservation – all without compromise for its customers.

    Since 2008, Jaguar Land Rover has doubled the number of powertrain engineers and invested in the research of a range of future powertrain solutions. This team is developing the technology that will help deliver a further 25 per cent improvement in CO2 emissions in the next five years.

    Jaguar Land Rover is committed to introducing electrification and has confirmed its electric future with an entry for Jaguar in the innovative FIA Formula E Championship. This investment will push the boundaries of electrification technology and provides a real-world, fast-track test bed for future Jaguar Land Rover electrification technology, transferring it from track to road.

    – Jaguar Land Rover reveals its ‘Jaguar Virtual Windscreen’ concept that will aid road and track driving
    – Hazard, speed, navigation data and the racing line could all be projected onto the entire windscreen.
    – Jaguar Land Rover demonstrates virtual imaging technology that could offer drivers a spectacles-free 3D image instrument cluster, replacing the rear view mirror
    – ‘Jaguar Virtual Windscreen’, 3D cluster and gesture control are part of a suite of new concept technologies that will reduce driver distraction

    Whitley, UK: Jaguar Land Rover is creating cutting-edge technologies to develop new ways to give drivers higher quality, life-like graphics and information that will offer an enhanced ‘virtual’ view of the road or race track.

    The ‘Jaguar Virtual Windscreen’ concept uses the entire windscreen as a display so the driver’s eyes need never leave the road. High quality hazard, speed and navigation icons could all be projected onto the screen together. For performance drivers, imagery that could aid track driving includes:

    Racing line and braking guidance. Virtual racing lines on the windscreen appear to be marked on the track ahead for optimum racing line, with changes in colour to indicate braking guidance.
    Ghost car racing. Improve your lap times by racing a ‘ghost car’ visualisation of your car on a previous lap, or compete against a lap uploaded from another driver.
    Virtual cones can be laid out on the track ahead for driver training. These could be moved as the driver’s ability improves.

    Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We are working on research projects that will give the driver better information to enhance the driving experience. By presenting the highest quality imagery possible, a driver need only look at a display once. Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for every-day driving on the road, or the track.”

    Jaguar Land Rover is developing a gesture control system to keep the driver’s eyes on the road and reduce distraction by limiting the need to look at or feel for buttons and switches to press.

    Jaguar Land Rover’s gesture control research uses E-Field Sensing, which is based on the latest capacitive discharge touch screensand gives much greater accuracy than ever before. A smartphone today detects the proximity of a user’s finger from 5mm. The Jaguar Land Rover system increases the range of the sensing field to around 15cm which means the system can be used to accurately track a user’s hand and any gestures it makes inside the car.

    “Gesture control has already become an accepted form of controlling anything from TV sets to games consoles. The next logical step is to control selected in-car features. We have identified which functions still need to be controlled by physical buttons and which could be controlled by gesture and carefully calibrated motion sensors,” said Dr Epple. “The system is currently being tested on a number of features including sunblinds, rear wipers and satellite navigation maps. It has the potential to be on sale within the next few years.”

    Jaguar Land Rover’s research team is also looking at technology that could replace rear view and external mirrors with cameras and virtual displays. Using two-dimensional imaging to replace mirrors is limited by the fact that single plane images on a screen do not allow the driver to accurately judge the distance or speed of other road users.

    Jaguar Land Rover has therefore developed an innovative 3D instrument cluster, which uses the latest head- and eye-tracking technology to create a natural-looking, specs-free 3D image on the instrument panel. Cameras positioned in the instrument binnacle or steering column area track the position of the user’s head and eyes. Software then adjusts the image projection in order to create a 3D effect by feeding each eye two slightly differing angles of a particular image. This creates the perception of depth which allows the driver to judge distance.

    2014 verá el lanzamiento de los primeros motores propios de JLR

    Décadas atrás, Jaguar y Land Rover, cada una por su lado, acostumbraban a diseñar y fabricar sus propulsores. Pero el constante baile de propietarios que progresivamente las fue modificando implicó el cierre de las factorías de propulsores de ambas compañías. Hasta que acabaron en manos de Tata.

    El problema actual de Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), es que adquiere los motores a precios relativamente elevados, a proveedores de la industria que son a su vez sus rivales. Proveedores como BMW, PSA o Ford.

    Pero si JLR quiere seguir creciendo, hacerlo de forma más flexible y con mayor rentabilidad, necesita hacer sus propios motores. Así se lanzó un proyecto de 550 millones de euros para crear una factoría de motores para JLR en Wolverhampton. Ahora, con la factoría prácticamente lista, empezamos a conocer detalles sobre los primeros motores que saldrán de allí.

    El primer nuevo propulsor en salir al mercado será un diésel de “alrededor de dos litros” con cuatro cilindros, inyección directa y turbocompresor de geometría variable, pensado principalmente para llegar a los Evoque, al sustituto del Freelander, y también equipar tanto al futuro sedán de segmento D de Jaguar como probablemente a la variante básica del Jaguar XF.

    Este nuevo motor diésel llegará a finales de 2014. Justo un año y medio después, a mediados de 2016, llegará un motor de alrededor de dos litros de gasolina, también de cuatro cilindros, con turbo, inyección directa, distribución variable “y otras tecnologías de vanguardia” que servirá para sustituir al 2.0 de origen Ford actualmente empleado por JLR, y también se convertirá en pieza central para el sedán de segmento D y para el XF de Jaguar.

    Dicen los responsables de ingeniería de motores de JLR que también están pensando en motores de tres cilindros, tanto gasolina como diésel, sobre el litro y medio de cilindrada, ya que aunque son motores más caros de desarrollar y fabricar (llevan elementos para eliminar vibraciones no deseadas, como ejes contra-rotantes), resultan más eficientes energéticamente.
